New Yoga Practice: Vata, Breathing Through Backbends

In this 30 minute practice, we embrace Vata or the element of air. We start with a full breath meditation to explore the abundance within. Then we use this breathing technique to explore space in backbends. We will engage the core to support camel, bridge, and wheel poses.

Full Moon Breath Meditation

We start this yoga class by breathing in. I call it the Full Moon Breath Meditation because it gives us access to the abundance that is always available to us. The Full Moon is all about completing and releasing. It’s often a time to birth, publish, and be out in the world. It’s vibrant and highly energized. When we get stuck in a scarcity mindset, it’s because we’ve forgotten that everything is in a natural rhythm of open/close, full/empty, day/night. Abundance is always there for us, waiting to move through us.

So we start with a breath in. Breathe in slowly until you feel like you are full. Then hold the breath in- let that expansion take shape in the body. Then sip in again through the nose and hold the breath in. Then exhale, letting the body sigh out. We repeat this a few times before transition into the movement part of practice.

Breathing In Backbends

In this class, we will come through two big backbends: Camel Pose and Wheel Pose. When we get there, I challenge you to practice the Full Moon Breath. Take a breath in, hold, sip in more, hold, and exhale. As you exhale see if there is a release, allowing more space to move deeper into the pose.
